Manfred · install
Set up the booth.
Manfred runs on Linux (x86_64), Windows (x86_64) and macOS (13.3 or later, on Apple Silicon). Each installer holds everything, the speech engine and model included.
The installers
Linux
manfred-<version>-linux-x86_64.run. Run it with
sh (or make it executable and run it); it installs into
~/.local/opt/manfred, links manfred into
~/.local/bin, adds Manfred to the app menu and opens
.manf recordings with it.
~/.local/opt/manfred/uninstall.sh removes it and leaves your
recordings alone.
Windows
Manfred-<version>-Setup.exe. Run it. It installs
into C:\Program Files\Manfred, adds Manfred to the Start
menu, opens .manf recordings with it and puts
manfred on your PATH. The installer is not code-signed, so
Windows may show a "Windows protected your PC" notice: choose More info,
then Run anyway.
macOS
Manfred-<version>.dmg. Open it and drag Manfred
into Applications. It is signed and notarized, so it opens like any
other app. The first time you record, macOS asks whether Manfred may
use the microphone and the camera.
Recordings go to Videos/Manfred in your home folder (Movies/Manfred on a Mac). Uninstalling never touches them.
From the terminal
On Linux and Windows there's nothing to do: the installer puts
manfred on your PATH (on Windows, open a new terminal after
installing). On a Mac, link the command once:
sudo mkdir -p /usr/local/bin
sudo ln -sf /Applications/Manfred.app/Contents/MacOS/manfred /usr/local/bin/manfred
or add this line to ~/.zshrc and open a new Terminal window:
export PATH="/Applications/Manfred.app/Contents/MacOS:$PATH"
Every command
manfred devices # the microphones and webcams Manfred can record
manfred record --seconds 60 # record the microphone into a .manf file
manfred list # your recordings, newest first
manfred export take.manf --audio # take.wav, the gated sound; add --raw for the untouched microphone
manfred export take.manf --video # take-video.mp4, the video as recorded
manfred export take.manf --both # take.mp4, the video with its sound
manfred transcribe take.manf # on your own machine
manfred export take.manf --srt # take.srt, the transcript as subtitles
manfred gui # the window
manfred tui # the terminal workspace
manfred license # Pro trial, Free or Pro
manfred update # check for updates now and install what is new
manfred --help lists every command, and
manfred <command> --help its options. Every command takes
--json. manfred alone opens the window, and manfred <file.manf> opens that recording in it.
The window and the terminal workspace look for an update once a day while they are open. An update installs only when its signature checks out. If Manfred ever crashes, it keeps a report on your machine and asks the next time it starts whether to send it; nothing is sent unless you say yes.
